project Redesigning SFGate was tricky business. We had to be careful not to annoy the site's loyal user base. The iterative design process included many rounds of user testing, some I which I conducted.

The redesign had many goals:

  1. Reorganize the site content
  2. Update the look and feel
  3. Greatly increase the ad inventory without compromising usability
  4. standardize and systematized the design (to make it easier to maintain)
  5. take advantage of AJAX technology to surface more content on each page
